Optifast Diet
The Optifast Diet
Optifast is the original protein sparing modified fast, developed at Harvard Medical School over thirty years ago. It is an outstanding alternative to gastric bypass surgery and specifically been designed for people who are 50 pounds or more overweight. Its safety and effectiveness have been documented in over 80 studies throughout the years. While undergoing the Optifast program, each patient receives great attention from Dr. Rigden and his staff, which includes a nutritionist, RN, and medical assistant. The goal is to help YOU change your relationship with food permanently, while losing weight.
What Can Optifast Patients Expect?
One analysis of Optifast results reported on over 20,000 patients who were followed for an average of 22 weeks showed the average weight loss of these individuals was 52 pounds. Blood glucose dropped an average of 29%, the cholesterol 15% and blood pressure 10%.
What Is The Optifast Program?
The Optifast Diet program can be varied and tailored to each individual need. However, Dr. Rigden will evaluate your specific situation and provide an analysis to you. In general, these are the four stages of the program:
- (a) The patient takes Optifast five times daily (800 calories) for the first 12 weeks of the program; no food is included.
- (b) Then a 400 calorie meal is consumed daily with 3-4 Optifast protein drinks until goal weight is achieved.
- (c) After goal weight is achieved the patient is on a six week transition diet from Optifast to food.
- (d) For maintenance, the patient is on a modified Mediterranean (low glycemic indeix) diet indefinitely.
Remember, if you are at least fifty pounds overweight, please contact our office to set an appointment to discuss how the Optifast Diet can greatly benefit you.
