PCOS
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
If you cannot lose weight, have abnormal menstrual cycles and/or cannot get pregnant, consider the possibility of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Due to hormonal imbalances, unwanted facial hair and acne are also common with this condition. Please take our self test to see if you need to start a comprehensive program to balance your hormones naturally and successfully lose the weight.
This syndrome affects 6-10% of women of reproductive age. It is the most common cause of infertility. 70% of PCOS women are obese. Elevated levels of androgen, ovulation problems, and ovarian cysts define PCOS. Hirsutism (unwanted facial hair) affects 70% of PCOS women. Their obesity is of the android type, i.e., they distribute their body fat in the apple distribution. They often have thinning of their hair on the top of the head and frequently have acne and/or seborrhea. Labs show elevated levels of testosterone and insulin as well as borderline or abnormal glucose readings. There often is a family history of diabetes and obesity.
The key goal of treatment is to reduce or normalize insulin resistance; this leads to a remarkable chain of events that helps the body to reduce elevated androgens, improve uterine function, enhance fertility, improve appearance, and attain a healthier weight. We have developed a multi-faceted approach that includes nutrition intervention, lifestyle modification, and weight management that can be tailored to the unique needs and biochemical individuality of the PCOS patient.
